It was a bit like two countries getting married, an alliance of power and money unseen since Schleswig married Holstein. When Jonathan Tisch, scion of the Loews clan, and Laura Steinberg, daughter of financier Saul Steinberg, fell head over heels with each other and were married at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan, it was the merger of the decade. A reception for five hundred followed at the Metropolitan Museum, with harpists plucking away in ivory togas, trumpeters in white tabards announcing dinner, and Camaval creations cavorting to the samba rhythms of a Brazilian orchestra. But behind all the trappings of Club Met, it was a whoop-de-do family feast.
