Opera has been taken up by the moneyed Los Angeles art crowd in a big way. and this month's Wozzeck should bring out toute la ville to see Marie get her throat slit. In the new production at the L.A. Opera. she does a few loads of laundry first, and the action takes place in two large boxes. Meanwhile. in the pit. Simon Rattle—the sexy, distinguished, and adventurous English conductor—makes his American operatic debut, with Mrs. Rattle, the soprano Elise Ross, as the doomed Marie.
