The Ultimate IN List
In order to attract the Robert McNamaras of tomorrow, the C.F.R. offers a fiveyear “term membership” to promising kids under forty. Among the good bets to move onto the list of lifelong members: WashingtonPost reporter Christopher Dickey, Atlantic editor James Fallows, Harvard professor Eliot Cohen, entrepreneuse Virginia Kamsky, and New York Timesmam Mark Uhlig.
Back home in Kansas, Mark Uhlig is somewhat lionized. He’s invited to speak at the local college. His opinions have appeared on the op-ed page of his hometown paper. It’s not surprising: at twenty-nine, Uhlig has one of the better jobs in the field—he’s editor of foreign news atThe New York Times Magazine—and is editing a book on South Africa for Random House.
Uhlig studied at Princeton, then went to the council’s ownForeign Affairs magazine and worked his way up from intern to associate editor. All the while he paid lightning visits to the world’s hot spots—South Africa, Chile, El Salvador—writing about them for the Times and The New York Review of Books.
Virginia Kamsky is another graduate of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School (or Woodie Woo, as it is called). She hit the ground running when the People’s Republic of China opened trade with the West, and, at thirty-two, heads her own (mostly female) company, which helps foreign corporations do business with the Chinese.
Kamsky probably logs more flying hours (New York-Beijing-New York) than most council members, but goes to the Pratt House as often as she can. The council, she says, has done more for her than any organization she can think of—and not just intellectually. Kamsky’s dinner partner at a meeting for China’s premier, Zhao Ziyang, subsequently became a major investor in her company. —E.O'S.
