In its own way, Philippe Halsman's Jump Book—first published in 1959 and republished this month by Harry N. Abrams—was a startling and rather charming exercise, for it suggested how silly even rum-silly people become to please the camera. Some of the departed jumpers, such as Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe (left, with Halsmart), appear particularly touching today. And there is a photo of an ever-so-slightly heavenbound and youthful Richard Nixon that makes one wonder whether he had even the faintest notion of what he was jumping into.
